Rear Lift Gate Plastic Panel Mounting Clip Repair Kit for 1984-1996 Jeep Cherokee (XJ)

$15.00

This is a kit of 11 replacement mounting clips for the rear gate panel on all trims of the 1984-1996 Jeep XJ Cherokee.  This plastic panel is very brittle and impossible to remove without breaking the mounting clips in most cases.  This kit is designed to slip over the broken mounting clips and be glued in place to allow the “Christmas Tree” clips to be installed again.  The broken mounting clips may need sanded or filed down some to get these replacements to sit flush as they are designed to put the tree clips in the same spot as they originally were.  The kit includes just the repair clips that are designed for the factory trees.  If the tree clips need replaced, most auto parts stores have them in stock in many different styles.

Any intact mounting clips should be left alone unless you want to break them off and replace them while it’s being worked on.  These are not designed to fit over an intact mounting clip, they height is the same as the factory clips so the broken ones must be sanded/filed down to allow these repair clips to sit at the proper height.

This kit includes the 11 replacement clips only.  No glue, cleaner, or additional parts are included.  Photos included only for reference.

INSTALLATION:

1.  Set aside the 2 clips that are marked with a different color.  They are shorter than the rest of them.  The two shorter clips are to be used on the ends as shown in the images.

2.  Test fit all the clips to see which ones sit down flush with the panel and which need to be sanded or filed down.

3.  Sand or file down the broken mounting clips to get the base of the new clips to sit flush on the panel.

4.  Once they are fitting well, it is recommended to lightly sand the panel around the mounting clips to give the glue a better grip.

5.  Clean-up all around the mounting clips to ensure the glue will stick well.

6.  Use a glue or an epoxy to attach the replacement clips.  Glue under and around the base and around the curve on the inside.  Super glue, non-expanding gorilla glue, 2-part epoxy ect. all should work.  Clamping shouldn’t be necessary but light clamping can be done until the glue is dry if desired.

7.  Once the glue is dry, reinstall the tree clips and reinstall the gate plastic.

***DISCLAIMER***

– These are printed in black PETG plastic.  This plastic has natural UV resistance so the color won’t fade over time and won’t get brittle.  This plastic can start to get soft at temperatures of 190*F.  Even in extreme environments this shouldn’t be an issue.  PETG parts have been used on vehicles for long periods of time without Ill effects.
